The Great Australasian Beer Spectapular has quickly become the most anticipated event on the Australian beer calendar.

This year 2 regular readers of Beer Adelaide have ventured over to Melbourne to review the array of spectacular South Aussie beers made specially for the event.

Below are the SA beers available with a description and reviews by Melbel and Patella.

13 - BAROSSA VALLEY BREWING
Christmas Pudding Porter
Style - Robust Porter
Charater - Fruity / Spicy
ABV - 6.5%

Christmas puddings, glacÚ fruits, cherries, sultanas and blackcurrants have all been added to this fascinating beer. Nutmeg, clove and cinnamon spices are later dropped in too before the beer is aged in brandy barrels for a month

Rating

Slight pudding flavour, but the spices are too dominate over the malt and hops.

Melbel - 2.0 Stars
Patella - 3.5 Stars

18 - BIG SHED BREWING
Golden Time Stout
Style - Sweet Stout
Charater - Roasty
ABV - 6%

This beer is a tribute to the classic Golden Gaytime ice cream. It was brewed with cacao nibs, rice and specialty grain for that honey aroma then lactose for sweetness.

Rating

Sweet honey taste reaching all of the tongue, cocoa is very noticeable.

Melbel - 3.5 Stars
Patella - 4.25 Stars

19 - BIRBECKS BREWING
So It Ends
Style - Imperial Pilsner
Charater - Hoppy
ABV - 7%

All the bitterness of a divorce, more hops than a kangaroo convention and a lager because everyone wants a lager...so it ends.

Rating

SCRATCHED

Unfortunately this beer has been scratched from GABS

68 - LOBETHAL BIERHAUS
K9
Style - Saison
Charater - Fruity / Spicy
ABV - 7.6%

A Chardonnay barrel-aged Saison brewed at Lobethal with the Yeastie Boys (NZ) and Wheaty Brewing Corps (SA). No tasting notes were provided but with these quality brewers behind it, try it regardless!.

Rating

Oaky Chardonnay flavour.
Sweet on the start with a dry finish.
Easy Saison, drinkable not challenging.

Melbel - 3.5 Stars
Patella - 3.75 Stars

73 - MISMATCH BREWING COMPANY
Banoffee Pie Dessert Ale
Style - Brown Ale (USA Style)
Charater - Fruity / Spicy
ABV - 7%

Inspired by the Banoffee Pie, this is a salted caramel Imperial Brown Ale fermented out with German Hefeweizen yeast. Expect a rich malt backbone loaded full of caramel complexity while the yeast displays the banana esters that drive home this delicious banana dessert.

Rating

Sweet with a roasted toffee, thin finish.
No yeast flavour from the yeast here.
Would be better with a sweeter finish, but great flavour.

Melbel - 3.0 Stars
Patella - 3.5 Stars

91 - PIKES BEER COMPANY
Tonic Ale
Style - Historical
Charater - Fruity / Spicy
ABV - 2.3%

Using orange and lemon peel, ginger, coriander and a special European hop, this 60 year old recipe provides a balanced citrus kick with botanical notes. By adding cinchona bark, tonic water bitterness combines with the light hop bitterness and dry finish to give a well rounded mouthfeel.

Rating

Very light and delightful.
Flavour and aroma of a lemon scent gum tree.
Very easy to drink and would be happy to all day.

Melbel - 3.75 Stars
Patella - 4.5 Stars

92 - PIRATE LIFE BREWING
Barbe Noire
Style - Specialty IPA
Charater - Hoppy
ABV - 10.4%

The brewers are big fans of Black IPAs, Belgian IPAs and Double IPAs so they brewed this Belgian Black Double IPA. A nice big roasty/malty base combines with a huge dose of big ballsy American hops and haracteristic Belgian yeast to make one tasty brew.

Rating

Smooth, but strong.
Hop driven with fruity spices. Good balance between the hops, malt and yeast.

Melbel - 5 Stars
Patella - 4 Stars

100 - ROBE TOWN BREWERY
Shearer's Joy
Style - Historical
Charater - Tart/Funky
ABV - 5%

Made with ingredients and methods available to Australian shearers in the 1800s. Quality bore water, Horehound, ginger, potatoes, brewing yeast and wild bacteria have been brewed using straw filter beds in timber mash tuns, a wood-fired kettle, open fermentation and natural carbonation. A crisp, spicy and slightly tart drop!

Rating

Very light, but with distinct ginger tones. Odd aroma, interesting concept.

Melbel - 3.5 Stars
Patella - 3.75 Stars

112 - VALE BREWING
Pie Cart
Style - Porter
Charater - Roasty
ABV - 7%

The Pie Cart was a South Australian institution after a late night pub crawl. Taking inspiration from an article written by Paul Mercurio about adding Porter to split green pea and ham soup, this is a split green pea and ham Porter.

Rating

Savoury aroma, with a slight Smokey finish. Good balance of malt on bitterness hops.

Melbel - 4 Stars
Patella - 4.25 Stars
