Angove & Sons

Angove & Sons was founded in 1886 by Dr. William Thomas Angove, a Cornish physician who planted a small vineyard in Tea Tree Gully, in Adelaide’s foothills. What began as a hobby, producing medicinal tonics for his patients, soon grew into one of South Australia’s most enduring winemaking legacies.

Dr. Angove’s first vineyard was planted mainly to Shiraz and Riesling. By the turn of the century, his vineyard had expanded from four to forty hectares, with a purpose-built winery and distillery processing nearly 300 tonnes of grapes each year. It was at this time the Winery started bottling Jack Bros Melrose Brewery beers.

In 1910, Dr. Angove’s son Thomas Carlyon Angove expanded the family business to Renmark in the Riverland, establishing a distillery and winery that helped shape the region’s modern wine industry.

Fifty years later, the third generation, Thomas William Carlyon Angove, purchased 480 hectares of land along the Murray River. The Angove family became pioneers in organic viticulture and sustainable winemaking, long before it became industry standard.

Under the leadership of John Carlyon Angove, the fourth generation, the family turned its attention to premium winemaking. They acquired the Warboys Vineyard and Angels Rise in McLaren Vale, converting both to certified organic production. These vineyards now produce some of the region’s finest wines, celebrated for their balance, purity, and expression of place.
