Caledonian Brewery

Charles Shand leased a property in Eastwood from William Farrow in 1884 and started a brewery. The brewery had humble beginnings with Charles brewing in a bathtub, the business quickly grew, and by 1885 laborers were hired and by 1886 his little brewery was turning out forty hogs heads a week.

Shand became insolvent in 1888 and John Henry Schickel leased the brewery on 15th of October 1888. John Schickel was joined at the brewery in 1893 by August Julius Richard Jaentsch and they purchased the brewery from the Farrow family. Later that year the pair purchased the Hyde Park Brewery from Mr Hart & Mr Todd. All the brewing equipment was moved from the Eastwood site to the Hyde Park site.

August Jaentsch died in 1896 leaving John Schickel to continue the brewery by himself. John Schickel died in Kalgoorlie in June 1897 from Pneumonia at the age of 35. John McAskill started employment in 1885 at the brewery before leaving and starting a bottling company and finally in 1890 he established the Thistle brewery in Glen Osmond.
