Walter and Clement Phillipson arrived in South Australia in the early 1870's and gained employment with Tolley
& Campbell as Wine and Spirit merchants. In 1880 a opportunity arose to purchase the Wine, Spirit and Beer
merchant business of F.G. Burton, The brothers purchased the company though the bottling of Primroses Union beers
was not included in the business. The new company was named Phillipson Bros and they only imported wine, spirits
and beers. The demand for good beers was outstripping supply for the business so in 1883 they made the decision to
build a brewery, a site in Hackney was selected and the brewery was operational by mid 1883 . The new brewery gained a great reputation and even won the only Australian Gold Medal at the Calcutta Exhibition in 1885. The company continued to bottled foreign beers while they brewed there own beers at the hackney brewery. In 1888 the company closed their office on Gresham Street, Adelaide and ran entirely from the brewery in Hackney. The company closed in 1893 and the brothers concentrated on their mining business that they were also running since the mid 1880's. |
