John Gleeson moved to Laura in 1872 where he started a timber business. John was the brother of Fanny Filgate
from the Clare brewery, and when the town started to increase in population John saw a business opportunity. Mr
Gleeson took the initiative and built a brewery on West Terrace on the edge of Laura. John was joined at the brewery
by Thomas Sabine when the brewery opened, and when the brewing business became to much for John in 1876 he
left the business and his sister Fanny took over his share in the brewery. The owners took on two new partners in 1880 with Arthur Gliddon from the Bank of South Australia and James Spicer auctioneer, though there was problems with this arrangement and the partnership was dissolved in late 1882. Thomas Sabine stayed on at the brewery though he was still having money problems, and the brewery was into administration in 1888 though the brewery continued with Thomas as manager. The Laura and Port August breweries were purchased by the South Australian Brewing Company Limited in 1893, with the Port Augusta Brewery used to brew beer for the north of the state, and unfortunately the Laura brewery ceased brewing after the purchase and the site was used as a distribution point for the brewery. |
