James Castle arrived in South Australia in 1848 and purchased a house in Willunga and worked as a shoemaker. By 1852 James started a general store on 5 High Street in Willunga named the Cyprus General Store. Over the next 18 years James opened two hotels in the area (Willunga Hotel and the first Old Bush Inn). By 1870 James had sold his interests in Willunga and moved to Adelaide, he became the licensee of several hotels. By 1876 James started a bottling company in Leigh Street bottling Dragon Brewery Ales & Porters. A year later the business was moved to Morphett Street. Through the years James had several business partners, but closed the bottling business when his wife Mary died in 1882. John worked as a storekeeper until his death in 1910 |
