John Newington arrived in South Australian in 1840 and quickly opened a brewery on North Terrace early in 1841.
These premises quickly became cramped and small so he moved his operations to Halifax Street and opened a
new brewery. The new Brewery was called the Kent Brewery. The brewery continued to operate until 1846 when it was
sold to Mr J Crowder and used as a Soft Drink Factory. John Newington later opened the Thebarton brewery in 1849.![]() Southern Australian, 13th December 1842 |
