Patrick Fitzgibbon Ryan and Alexander McDonald operated a aerated waters company from Flinders Street at the former
Billin and Wrights site from 1882 to 1884, at the same time they were also operating a Beer bottling establishment from
Grenfell Street in Adelaide. In 1884 the company moved to Grey Street near the West End Brewery, Patrick Ryan would most
likely been a relative of T. Ryan who bottled West End beers 10 years earlier. Also in 1884 a depot was opened in Nile Street in
Port Adelaide. The company fell on hard times and almost went into insolvency late 1884 but within a year the business came
good and all creditors were paid back. Ryan & McDonald exhibited their bottled beer at the Adelaide Expo of 1887 but it is
unlikely the won any awards. The partnership between Mr Ryan and Mr McDonald dissolved in 1888 and the company was renamed Ryan & Co. A Broken Hill branch was opened in 1888 and a market was also found in Western Australia as a few of his patent bottles have been found in WA. The company moved to Sturt street in 1895 but closed shortly afterward. |
