James Walsh built the Adelaide Brewery on Pirie Street in 1843 and leased the brewery out to many brewers. In the 1850s James imported English beer and bottled it for the local market. In 1864 Walsh is also listed as being a brewer in Hackney, most likely from his own private residence. Walsh left for England in 1873 but died 14 day into the journey. After Walsh's death Syme & Sison purchased the brewery from his estate, they had been brewing there since 1863 but only leased the brewery from Mr Walsh. |
