Edward Dutton was an experienced brewer who had brewed previously at Noarlunga and after starting the Yankalilla
brewery in 1864, he moved to Goolwa and set up a brewery at the gateway to the Murray regions. Edward purchased
an existing structure and modified it to suit brewing, and by 1865 the new brewery was operational. Within a short
period of time, Mr Dutton started to have beer shipped up the Murray, Darling and Murrumbidgee rivers reaching all
the small river towns. Edward Dutton retired in 1879 and put his brewery up for sale. Edward Clark from the Auburn Brewery purchased the Goolwa Brewery and started manufacturing aerated waters just like the business that he had established at the Auburn Brewery. Edward continued for ten years before declaring insolvency in 1889. The brewery manager John James Spencer operated the brewery until 1893 when the site was closed. ![]() Brewery building in 2024 ![]() Southern Argus, 29th May 1869 ![]() Southern Argus, 15th May 1884 |
