Lobethal Brewery

Frederick W Kleinschmidt had emigrated from Bremen in 1836 and he moved to Lobethal in the mid 1840's. Frederick as well as his two business partners Conrad D Engelking and Frederick W Plonges built a brewery in 1851 on Mill Road next to the Lobethal Creek. The business owners dissolved their partnership in August 1860 and Kleinschmidt continued the brewery alone. Frederick started to grow hops in Lobethal in the mid 1860's and built a hop drying kiln in the town.

By the end of the 1860's the hop plantation took priority over the brewery, and due to the aging brewing equipment that needed to be upgraded Mr Kleinschmidt closed the brewery in 1869. The brewery was converted to a tweed mill and the brewing equipment was sold to Johnstons Oakbank Brewery. The original buildings stood until 1994 when the creek flooded and a group of buildings in the area were damaged and were demolished.
