The South Australian Brewing Company was established in 1888 with the amalgamation of two of the states largest breweries the West End and Kent Town breweries.

The brewery was purchased by Lion Nathan in 1993 with most of the local brands being discontinued, now only 3 of the local beers are made, West End Draught, Southwark Bitter and one of the best stouts in Australia, Southwark Stout.
