Robert Fotheringham

Robert Fotheringham was a prominent South Australian businessman and respected community figure, best known for his long association with Kapunda. Born in Alloa, Clackmannanshire, Scotland, he was the youngest member of a pioneering family that later settled in Gawler. In his early years, he worked under his brother, who was a banker in their native town, before emigrating to Australia in 1855 aboard the Oliver Lang. After initially spending time in Melbourne, he joined his brothers in business at Gawler.

Fotheringham eventually moved to Kapunda, where he became the proprietor of the Spring Brewery, which he managed for seventeen years. Throughout his life, he was recognised for his integrity, generosity, and commitment to public service, supporting local institutions and assisting the needy whenever possible. His sudden death on September 19, 1890, at the residence of his sister-in-law, Mrs. Peacock, was deeply felt by the community. At the time of his passing, he was still in good health, making his death all the more shocking. In Kapunda, his loss was widely mourned, with flags flown at half-mast and shops partially closed in tribute to a man esteemed for both his business acumen and his steadfast civic engagement.
