Thomas Fotheringham

Thomas Fotheringham was a respected South Australian businessman and community figure, known for his long association with Gawler and Kapunda. Born on January 29, 1828, at West Cambus near Alloa, Scotland, he was the sixth son of David Fotheringham, long-time manager of the Cambus distillery.

Fotheringham emigrated to South Australia in 1856 and initially settled in Gawler for two years before moving to Kapunda to take charge of the local brewery, a business he co-owned with his brothers James and Robert. Following the death of his brother James, he returned to Gawler to oversee the family brewery there, while his brother Robert continued the Kapunda operation.

Renowned for his geniality, kindness, and steady character, Thomas Fotheringham was appointed a Justice of the Peace and occasionally served on the Bench, though he preferred to focus on his business and the comforts of home rather than pursue public office. He passed away on January 30, 1893, at the age of 65, leaving a legacy of integrity and quiet civic contribution.
