Frank John Schembri (born Bighi Bay, Malta, 1885; died Ethelton, S.A., 1960) was a merchant seaman and fisherman before joining the British Navy from 1902 to 1914. He arrived in Port Adelaide in 1915, and after working on the construction of the Semaphore tramline, he purchased a small shop at the corner of Hart and Russell Streets, Ethelton. Initially focusing on ice cream production, Schembri began making aerated waters on a small scale, selling them from his shop. The success of the aerated waters led him to cease ice cream production altogether. Schembri's emblem was the Cross of Malta, and over the years, he was assisted by two of his sons and a son-in-law. By the end of the Second World War, he was using quart bottles. In March 1955, Schembri's became a limited company. However, in 1964, the Highways Department purchased the property for the realignment of the Jervois Bridge, and the business was not relocated. |
