In 1915, Ecks Ltd. was established as a brewing company in Victoria, with offices initially located in Collins Street, Melbourne, and later consolidated in Simmons Street, South Yarra by 1917. By 1922, Ecks Ltd. expanded its operations to South Australia, setting up business at the former site of Federal Co-op Mineral Waters on Gilbert Street, Adelaide. F.G.W. Payze collaborated with Ecks Ltd. through a franchise arrangement, introducing a popular ginger beer to the market. However, the company faced challenges with bottle quality. Initially, they utilized unmarked crown seal stoneware ginger beer bottles, which were prone to chipping on the lip. Subsequently, they switched to crown seal bottles but encountered difficulties in retrieving them once distributed. Competitors, upon discovering Ecks Ltd. bottles in their returns, resorted to smashing them, exacerbating the bottle shortage. Despite its popularity, Ecks Ltd. ceased operations on May 2, 1926, in South Australia while continuing to trade in Victoria. |
