Benjamin Burlinson, born in Durham in 1850, arrived in Adelaide in 1874 and worked as a marine engineer for the South Australian Government. He later moved to Victoria and then Queensland, where he established the Herbica & Cordial Factory and Vinegar Works, producing bitters and cordials. In 1891, he became an aerated water and cordial manufacturer in Parkside, SA, and in 1892, he founded B. Burlinson & Sons on Young Street, producing aerated waters, cordials, and sauces. Burlinson's products were also exported to Western Australia. In 1903, he sold his Red Cross factory to A.T.S. Hall.
