| Joseph Solomon was a prominent cordial and soft drink manufacturer in Adelaide, beginning operations in 1877 at the Adelaide Cordial Factory in Currie Street, in partnership with Martin Stephen. The business quickly established itself as a reliable producer of cordials and aerated beverages, supplying a growing urban population at a time when such drinks were in high demand.
As the company expanded, the partners diversified into brewing beer, prompting a move from the original Currie Street premises to larger facilities in Waymouth Street better suited to increased production. Around this time, Joseph Solomon withdrew from the partnership, choosing instead to remain at the Currie Street site where he continued manufacturing cordials and soft drinks under the name Eureka Cordial Factory. The Eureka Cordial Factory traded independently until 1886, when Solomon sold the business. The new owners, E. & W. Beaumont, continued operations for a short period before selling the company in 1887 to the partnership of Carstairs & Coxell. Under their ownership, the business achieved immediate success, winning awards at the Adelaide Exhibition in 1887, highlighting the quality and reputation of its products. The company continued to operate into the late 1880s, though by around 1890 advertising and public notices ceased, suggesting the business had either closed or been absorbed into another operation. Despite its relatively short lifespan, the Eureka Cordial Factory represents an important chapter in Adelaide’s early cordial and soft drink industry, reflecting the rapid growth, competition, and innovation of beverage manufacturing in the late 19th century. |
