James Crase, son of George and Elizabeth Crase, was born in 1819 in Penryn, Cornwall. He married Mary Ann Vivian Moyle on May 3, 1847, in Camborne, Cornwall. They migrated to South Australia later that year. Initially employed at Port Adelaide, James later worked at Allen's Creek mine near Kapunda. He opened a butcher's shop in Hill Street and farmed on Clare Road. After two successful trips to the Victorian gold mines in 1852 and 1853, he purchased and rebuilt the North Kapunda Hotel in 1865. A pioneer of Kapunda, he served as a councillor and was a member of various local lodges.
