T.J. Monro, born in Inverness, Scotland in 1830, was the son of James Monro, a producer of aerated waters in Port Adelaide. The Monro family arrived in Adelaide on the ship "Superb" on October 19th, 1839. Initially, they operated the East Torrens (Tower) Hotel in Magill before relocating to Gawler in 1868, where his father began manufacturing aerated waters the same year. T.J. Monro expanded the business with branches in Kapunda and Caltowie, as well as Monro and Co. in Gladstone and Leamington (Jamestown). Following T.J. Monro's death on May 31st, 1879, the S.A. Register on September 17th, 1879, announced tenders for the purchase of Monro Cordial Factory in Gawler. All Monro operations ceased in the same year.
