William Paxton, born in Brighton, Sussex, England in 1818, died in London on 1st September 1893. He arrived in Adelaide in 1840 and became a prominent citizen. In 1843, he bought 'Navarino House' in Hindley Street, establishing 'Apothecary's Hall,' a chemist and druggist shop. In 1845, Paxton bought shares in the Burra Mine and became a director. He also acquired Town Acre 30, North Terrace, known as Paxton's Cottage, later 'Ayres House.' Paxton built Burra's first hotel, the 'Burra Hotel,' in 1846 and owned several other inns and a brewery by the early 1850s. He was well-liked in Burra, where 'Paxton Square' is named after him. In 1855, he sold his North Terrace house and returned to England. His aerated water manufacturing in Hindley Street likely occurred between 1843 and 1853. William Paxton passed away on 1st September 1893 in Palmerra Square, London. .
