| John Eamer and his wife Louise migrated from England to South Australia in 1850 aboard the Andromache. Drawn by the Victorian gold rush, John tried his luck as a prospector and enjoyed some early success, but by 1854 he had abandoned mining. That same year he purchased property and began selling beer in bulk, and by 1859 he was even considering establishing a winery. By the mid-1860s, John had taken on several clerical and office roles. The strain of this work affected his health, culminating in a minor stroke in September 1866. After recovering, John returned to his entrepreneurial interests, and in 1869 he founded the Lion Brewery in Hackney, just east of Adelaide. The venture appears to have been short-lived, likely lasting less than a year. By 1872, John and Louise had relocated to Melbourne, where they established a series of boarding houses and left brewing behind entirely. |
