Daniel Cudmore, one of the state's first brewers moved to Kapunda in 1848 where he built a brewery near Allen's Creek, just a few miles out of Kapunda. The new brewery was known by several names, from the Kapunda Brewery, Allens Creek Brewery and finally the Spring Brewery. John Haimes purchased the brewery from Cudmore in 1849, he was then joined by his brothers Richard and Thomas, with Thomas being the head brewer. The three brothers successfully continued the brewery until 1858 when they ran into financial problems and sold the brewery to the Fotheringham brothers from Gawler. James, Robert and Thomas Fotheringham had been successfully brewing at the Gawler Brewery for several years, and after the purchase of the Kapunda Brewery, Thomas was appointed manager of the Kapunda branch. Thomas left the company in 1864 leaving Robert to manage the Kapunda Brewery and soon afterward George Teagle was hired as head brewer. The brewery grew in popularity and started to ship beer to the northern townships, upgrades to the brewery were performed as well as building a pipeline to Kapunda to supply the town with fresh spring water. Robert Fothingham died in 1885, Roberts sons George and Robert Jr took control of the brewery, and assigned the store-man Andrew Thomson as the manager, at around this same time George Teagle the head brewer left the business to start his own brewery in Kapunda named the Hillsley Brewery. The brewery limped along in the 1890's and finally stopped brewing in 1909, after brewing ceased the breweries hotel was supplied by the South Australian Brewing Co.
