Gray's Brewery

Lost 38, Brewery Street, Melrose| Charles Henry Gray established his first brewing venture in Melrose in 1859, having learned the trade under the guidance of his relative Benjamin Gray at Littlehampton. A small brewery was constructed in the shadow of Mount Remarkable, producing beer that was supplied to local hotels throughout the Melrose district. In 1862, Charles left the Melrose brewery, spending a brief period in Woodside before relocating to Stirling North, where he established the Northern Brewery. Control of the Melrose brewery passed to Guildford Emery Gray in 1867, marking Guildford’s first involvement in brewing. During his time in Melrose, Guildford also served as publican of the North Star Hotel, combining hotel management with brewery operations. Guildford Emery Gray departed Melrose in 1868 to take up operations at the Macclesfield Brewery. The Melrose brewery was subsequently purchased by Benjamin Robinson, who continued to operate it until his death in 1875. |
