The Morphett Vale brewery was built by Alexander Anderson in the late 1849, Alexander was the licensee at the Emu
Hotel in Morphett Vale, and along with the hotel Alexander also built a mill and the brewery on the same property.
The brewery was finished in October 1850, described as the most creditable building in the district, and was leased
to Joseph Edwards. Joseph quickly ran into financial problems and was declared insolvent by April 1851, after Mr
Anderson took Joseph to court to recoup some of his costs, and Mr Alexander operated the brewery for several years.
Thomas Auld from Gawler leased the brewery off Anderson in 1855, but again the brewery was not paying its
way and Mr Auld was bankrupt by 1858. The bad run for the brewery continued when Charles Catchlove and James
Hoskin leased the brewery but both left the business after a year of operation. Finally Wilhelm Adolf Gerloff leased the
brewery in 1860, the brewery was closed in 1867. |
