| James and Andrew Galbraith Johnston migrated from Campbeltown, Scotland, to South Australia in 1839. The brothers settled the following year on the banks of the Onkaparinga River, where they established a rural holding which they named Oakbank, after their home district in Scotland. This settlement would later give its name to the surrounding township. In 1843, the Johnston brothers constructed a brewery at Oakbank, making it one of the earliest breweries established in South Australia. Operated as a close family partnership, the brewery quickly became a cornerstone of the local economy and the social life of the Adelaide Hills. From its earliest years, the business expanded steadily, supplying beer to inns and hotels throughout the Hills and neighbouring districts. The Johnston enterprise grew further in 1873 with the purchase of Kleinschmidt’s Lobethal Brewery, extending their brewing reach and reinforcing their position as one of the colony’s most important regional brewers. For more than four decades, the Oakbank brewery operated under the direct control of the founding brothers, until the death of Andrew Galbraith Johnston in 1886, which brought the original partnership to an end. Following the death of James Johnston in 1891, the business passed to the next generation. Andrew Dean Johnston, son of James, and William Galbraith Johnston, son of Andrew Galbraith Johnston, assumed control as directors, ensuring continuity of family management and preserving the company’s long-established traditions. In 1901, the enterprise was formally incorporated as J. & A. G. Johnston Ltd, reflecting both its scale and its commercial maturity. By this time, the company owned more than twenty hotels across the Adelaide Hills and surrounding districts, operating one of the most extensive tied-house systems outside metropolitan Adelaide. Despite its prominence, the company ceased all brewing operations in 1914, marking the end of more than seventy years of beer production at Oakbank. Thereafter, Johnston-owned hotels were supplied with beer brewed by the South Australian Brewing Company Ltd, while the family retained ownership of its extensive hotel and beverage interests. The Johnston business has continued into the present day as a family-run operation, now focused on the manufacture of cordials and related products. Its longevity is remarkable: J. & A. G. Johnston was the first country brewery established in South Australia, and today stands as the oldest continuously operating family-run business in the state, a legacy that traces directly back to two Scottish brothers who settled beside the Onkaparinga River in the 1840s.   |
