Otto Brandt

Otto Brandt arrived in Adelaide from Bremen in Germany where he worked at the Saint Pauli brewery. Otto had become involved with the German Club in Adelaide and he became secretary in 1880. Mr Brandt started importing Saint Pauli beer to Adelaide in 1881 under his Butterfly brand.

Bremen branded lager was imitated a great deal over the next 15 years with Mr Brandt taking out several legal proceedings to stop the use of the name Brandt and against copying his Butterfly logo.
