Kensington Brewery

The northern part of Section 290, Kensington was first owned by Mr. George Brunskill who cleared the land and started farming. Good quality clay was found at the site and a brick yard was constructed. Due to financial difficulties in 1848 Mr. Brunskill sold off the eastern section of his land for housing, and this new area was named Marryatville. Second Creek runs through Marryatville a good source of water for a brewery. Mr Thring constructed the brewery in late 1849, the brewery was owned by Mr Samuel Thomson in 1852 and Mr J Saunders took over prior to 1855. A Mr Walker was operating the brewery prior to its closure. The brewery was demolished in 1907 and the Marryatville Police Station was constructed on the site.
