Balhannah Brewery

James Thomson emigrated from Scotland in 1839 and settled in the Adelaide Hills and named the area Balhannah. By 1843 he had built a hotel and to supply the hotel he also built a brewery. Unfortunately, Thompson was not an experienced brewer and he quickly ran into difficulties, and by 1845 Mr. Thompson fell on hard financial times and he closed the brewery and moved to Sydney. Thompson returned in 1852 and started the brewery up again. Due to problems with some of his neighbours, and spending a year in gaol, he closed the brewery again.
