The Thebarton Brewery was constructed in 1849 by John Newington. John was operating the Kent Brewery in Halifax Street in the 1840's until he was insolvent and sold the brewery to Mr J Crowder. In 1849 he started brewing again in Thebarton supplying the local hotels like the Wheatsheaf hotel. The brewery was sold not long after it was constructed and it changed hands several times in the next year until Mr Joseph Green purchased the brewery in 1853.
