West Adelaide Brewery

T he first record of a brewer in South Australia was John Lillyman. The South Australian Gazette and Colonial Register records Mr Lillyman as a brewer in January 1838. John operated the West Adelaide Brewery on the northern banks of the River Torrens, West of Morphett Street. The West Adelaide brewery made their beer out of malted wheat instead of barley presumingly because malted barley was in sort supply at the time.

A murder was recorded as happening at the brewery on the 8th March 1838. A laborer named Enoch Pegler was found dead laying on a path near the brewery. Lillymans West Adelaide brewery was closed in September 1838 due to declining business, and all the brewing equipment was sold in October.
