Gray's Brewery


Charles Henry Gray's first brewing business was established in Melrose in 1859, Charles had learned brewery from his relative Benjamin Gray in Littlehampton. A little brewery was setup on the shadow of Mount Remarkable and the beer brewed was sent to the local hotels in the Melrose area. Charles left the brewery in 1862, he moved to Woodside briefly and then he moved to Stirling North and setup the Northern Brewery. Guildford E Gray took control of the brewery in 1862, just like Charles this was Guildford's first brewing venture. Guildford was also the publican of the Northern Star Hotel in Melrose while he was living in Melrose. Mr Guildford Gray left Melrose in 1868 to operate the Strathalbyn Brewery, Benjamin Robinson purchased the Melrose Brewery and operated it until his death in 1875.
