| The Castle Inn was built in 1847 at the intersection of Hindley and Morphett Streets by Thomas Ford, who had previously been the publican of the Joiners Arms Hotel, located just around the corner on Morphett Street. Finding the Joiners Arms too small, Ford made plans in 1845 to construct a larger hotel further up the street. He left the Joiners Arms that same year and began work on what would become the Castle Inn. The hotel opened in March 1847, but Ford sold it just a year later, in 1848, to William Hill. Located in Adelaide’s West End, the Castle Inn quickly became a popular establishment. In 1933, it was acquired by the Clarke family, who later undertook renovations in 1953, including the removal of the balcony, restoring the building’s original appearance. The hotel was sold in 1966 and subsequently demolished to make way for Barron’s Town House Motel. Throughout its history, the Castle Inn witnessed the transformation of Hindley Street’s West End—from a quiet, outer-city district to a thriving hub of activity. With the brewing industry booming around it, including the opening of the Morphett Street Brewery in 1855 and the West End Brewery just across the street in 1859, the hotel likely served as a favoured gathering place for brewery workers until its closure in 1966.  1954 State Library [B 13012] Click here for a high resolution image |
