| Upon coming into possession of his town acre in Hindley Street West (north side), Mr. Robert Thomas, the founder of the “S.A. Register," lost little time in erecting temporary family apartments, and buildings for the production of our first newspaper. A large two-storey mansion, “Clarendon House," intended as a family residence, was commenced In 1839, on the eastern corner of Hindley Street and what is now Register Place. Owing to a delay in the completion of “Clarendon House,” “Rhantregwnwyn Cottage," nearby, which had been erected by Mr. Thomas, was adopted as a home, and it was decided to let the large house as a public office, bank, or hotel. The collapse of 1841, however, upset these plans. and it was not until 1848 that the house was taken over for hotel purposes. It was then appropriately' licensed as the “Clarendon" Hotel, and continued through the years until about 1920, when it was delicensed and later demolished. There is no photograph of this building in the Archives collection and one showing the old hotel in its heyday would be of considerable historical interest. J.
