The Cornwall Inn was established in the early years of settlement along the Aldinga Road, approximately one mile from Willunga. During the 1850s and 1860s, this route was a busy thoroughfare, with bullock wagons travelling between Willunga and Port Willunga.

The inn operated during a period when the Willunga Council issued licences to local public houses, and it also served an important civic role. Council records indicate that a number of meetings were held at the Cornwall Inn during the 1850s.

The first recorded licensee was John Vanstone, who took over on 15 September 1853. The licence changed hands frequently in the following years, with the Vanstone name reappearing several times. The final recorded licensee was Mary Walters in 1876.
