The Beachport Hotel opened in 1879, just a month before the Mount Gambier railway reached the town. Originally named the Bay View Hotel, it opened at the same time as the present Bompas building, which at that time traded as the Beachport Hotel before losing its licence in 1888.
Only a few months after opening, the Bay View was described as a “two-storey stone structure, furnished with every convenience. Besides possessing all that is required in the way of parlours, bedrooms, etc., they are each furnished with bath and smoking-rooms — two important extras that few hotels in the district possess.”
The hotel has remained Beachport’s principal establishment for more than a century, changing its name to the Beachport Hotel in 1958. It was extended in 1929, likely to the rear, and further additions to both sides and the rear were made in later decades. Despite these alterations, the original street façade remains largely unchanged since the hotel’s construction in the 19th century.
