SOUTHERN CROSS HOTEL

The Southern Cross Hotel originally opened in 1846 as the Greyhound Hotel, built by John Day. It was designed to serve country travellers, with a stockyard, stables, and even a shoeing forge for replacing horseshoes. Day left the hotel in 1847, and it was under the next publican, Frederick Allen, that the name was changed to the Southern Cross Hotel. After Frederick’s death in 1850, his widow Catherine Allen took over the running of the establishment.

Major renovations were carried out in 1879, transforming the building into a three-storey hotel with 20 bedrooms across the upper floors. The £3,600 investment modernised the hotel, which remained one of Adelaide’s most popular due to its prime central location.

The Southern Cross continued operating until the mid-20th century, when increasing maintenance costs made repairs unfeasible. The hotel closed in 1974. Its bar area was removed and converted into a pedestrian arcade connecting King William Street and James Place. The hotel's liquor licence was transferred to the newly opened James Place Hotel.

While the building’s impressive Victorian façade remained for decades as a visual reminder of Adelaide’s past, it was sadly demolished in 2021 to make way for the Kings Lane development.
