The Rose Inn was built in 1840 by Ephraim Randall, making it one of the earliest hotels in the southern part of Adelaide. The hotel quickly became a key meeting place and was notably one of the first venues used by the Odd Fellows Adelaide Order.
In 1923, the Rose Inn was remodelled by Edward Symonds and reopened under a new name—the Hotel Carlton. Designed as a sports bar, the establishment became particularly popular among military personnel.
In 1967, the hotel reverted to its original name, the Rose Inn, but after just eight years, it was permanently closed.
Fortunately, the historic building was preserved and still stands today. Many of its architectural features remain intact, sparking hope that it could one day be restored to its former glory as a working hotel.
