WHITE HART HOTEL

The Volunteer Inn was first built on the corner of Hindley and Peel streets by George Robert Thompson. His ownership was brief, and the hotel quickly changed hands before being purchased by Patrick Auld in 1842. Two years later, Auld renamed it the White Hart Inn, after the mythological white stag of British folklore.

In 1855 the property was rebuilt by the Grieg family as a handsome two-storey hotel with a wide verandah. Following the death of Alexander Grieg in 1861, his wife Eliza briefly managed the business before selling it later that year.

The White Hart soon became a favourite haunt for actors and theatre patrons from the Royal Theatre across the street. In 1878 the hotel underwent another complete rebuild, this time with a grander frontage along Hindley Street, reflecting its growing popularity.

By 1927 the hotel’s lease had expired, and the lower floor was converted into shops. The building then became known as the White Hart Chambers, standing until 1973 when it was finally demolished. Though gone, the White Hart remains remembered as one of Hindley Street’s prominent 19th-century hotels.
