The original building was constructed in 1922 by the Fricker Brothers under a 21-year lease. Originally, it featured a beach kiosk, a bathing pavilion, and a spacious dance hall.
The ground-level Bathing Pavilion offered lockers, showers, and rental services for bathing costumes and beach shelters. Upstairs, the first floor housed a café, tearooms, and the grand dance hall.
Over the years, the Palais became a gathering place for various clubs and was later utilized by the Semaphore Surf Life Saving Club.
Though the reinforced concrete structure fell into disrepair for many years, it was restored in the early 1990s, preserving its distinctive 1920s architectural style. It reopened as The Semaphore Palais Hotel & Function Centre, breathing new life into this historic landmark.
