| Beard & Brau Farmhouse Brewery was an independent craft brewery established in Para Hills, a northern suburb of Adelaide, South Australia. Founded during the rapid expansion of Australia’s craft beer industry in the 2010s, the brewery developed a reputation for producing traditional European-inspired farmhouse ales, saisons and barrel-aged beers with a strong focus on natural fermentation and rustic brewing techniques. The brewery was established by brewer Chris Herring, whose brewing philosophy drew heavily from Belgian and French farmhouse brewing traditions. Operating on a relatively small scale, Beard & Brau distinguished itself from many contemporary Australian craft breweries through its emphasis on mixed fermentation, wild yeasts, oak ageing and complex sour beer styles rather than heavily hopped American-inspired beers that dominated much of the local market at the time. Based initially in Para Hills, the brewery quickly gained recognition among craft beer enthusiasts for its distinctive approach and limited-release beers. Beard & Brau regularly experimented with local ingredients, barrel maturation and bottle conditioning, helping introduce many South Australian drinkers to traditional farmhouse and sour beer styles that were still relatively uncommon in Australia during the early 2010s. As the brewery developed, Beard & Brau relocated from South Australia to Mount Tamborine in Queensland. The move allowed the brewery to expand its farmhouse brewing philosophy within a more rural environment suited to barrel ageing and mixed fermentation production. Mount Tamborine, already known for wineries, tourism and artisan food producers, provided a natural setting for the brewery’s rustic and small-batch approach. Following the relocation, Beard & Brau continued producing farmhouse ales and sour beers while further developing its reputation within Australia’s independent brewing industry. The brewery became well regarded for blending traditional European brewing methods with Australian ingredients and conditions, and was recognised as one of the more experimental and specialised breweries operating in the country during the period. Although never a large commercial operation, Beard & Brau played an important role in broadening the diversity of Australian craft beer styles and helped popularise farmhouse and wild fermentation beers among Australian drinkers. |
