| The Exchange Hotel first opened in December 1857. That same year, it became a meeting place for locals who opposed the political views of Captain John Hart, who later served three terms as Premier of South Australia. In February 1882, the hotel was renamed the New Exchange Hotel and offered modern facilities for visitors, including horses and traps for hire. The original building was demolished in 1935 when McLaren Wharf was widened. In more recent years, the hotel has undergone several name changes — becoming the Lighthouse Inn in 1986, Ales & Sails in 2004, and finally The Lighthouse Hotel in 2009.
