| Sweet Amber Brewery was an independent South Australian craft beer company established by Dane Adkins during the growth of Adelaide’s modern craft beer scene in the 2010s. The business began with the opening of the Sweet Amber Brew Café at Semaphore, combining specialty coffee, food and craft beer within one of Adelaide’s best-known seaside suburbs. Semaphore had long been associated with hotels, tourism and hospitality dating back to the nineteenth century, and the relaxed coastal atmosphere of the area suited the emerging craft beer culture that was developing across Adelaide during the period. Sweet Amber quickly developed a loyal local following through its café and bar operations, introducing customers to independent craft beer styles at a time when Adelaide’s brewery scene was rapidly expanding. In its early years Sweet Amber beers were contract brewed through Barossa Valley Brewing, allowing the company to establish its brand and beer range without the immediate expense of building a brewery. This approach was common among many emerging Australian craft breweries during the 2010s, with contract brewing providing an entry point into the increasingly competitive independent beer market. As the business grew, Sweet Amber expanded beyond Semaphore and in 2018 established its own brewery facility at Regency Park in Adelaide’s western industrial suburbs. The brewery included a 500 litre brewhouse, fermentation tanks, bright beer tank and an attached taproom capable of hosting around seventy patrons. The new brewery allowed Sweet Amber to bring production in-house and further develop its range of beers and hospitality offerings. The business opened a taphouse in Harbour Town in 2019. With the pandemic hitting in 2020 the brewery in Regency Park closed in 2022 and the Harbour Town venue was closed in 2023.  Harbor Town Cellar Door  |
