| Woolshed Brewery was established at Wilkadene Station near Renmark in South Australia’s Riverland region and became one of the state’s best-known regional breweries. Located within a restored historic shearing shed overlooking a backwater of the Murray River, the brewery combined craft beer, tourism and rural heritage in a uniquely Riverland setting. The Wilkadene property formed part of the historic Murtho pastoral station country north of Renmark. The site included a nineteenth century cottage dating from 1859 and a shearing shed more than 100 years old, reflecting the region’s long history of sheep grazing and agriculture along the Murray River. The Freeman family purchased the Wilkadene portion of the property in 1988 and gradually developed it into a tourism and accommodation destination. The brewery itself was established by Tom and Sarah Freeman. In 2008 the couple purchased a 10-hectolitre brewing system and produced their first commercial batch of beer in 2009 inside the refurbished shearing shed. The brewery quickly became known for its relaxed riverfront setting, with visitors able to arrive by road or directly by boat from the Murray River. A major figure in the brewery’s development was head brewer Jackson Beavis, who joined the operation in 2010 after leaving a manufacturing career to pursue brewing professionally in his hometown region. In 2015 Beavis travelled to the United Kingdom to work in traditional breweries and study through the Institute of Brewing and Distilling before returning to the Riverland. His brewing work later helped Woolshed Brewery win significant recognition at the Royal Adelaide Beer & Cider Awards, including Champion Small Brewery in 2019. As the brewery grew, Wilkadene expanded its tourism operations to include cellar door experiences, houseboat accommodation, food events and brewery tourism. The combination of historic buildings, Murray River scenery and locally inspired craft beer helped establish Woolshed Brewery as one of the Riverland’s most popular tourism destinations.   |
