Robert Anderson and his brother-in-law George Sharp had started brewing at the Port MacDonnell and West End Breweries and by 1867 the existing sites were not able to keep up with demand, so the pair decided to build a brand new brewery. The new brewery was completed by early 1868 and the Port MacDonnell brewery was sold, the new brewery was located on Commercial Street and was named the Standard Brewery. George Sharp retired from the brewery in 1873 leaving Robert to manage the brewery alone.

Robert Anderson died in 1881, and his brother Walter James Anderson who had been working at the Standard Brewery leased the business from Roberts estate. By the end of the century Walter had retired from the day to day running of the brewery leaving his nephew James Anderson to manage the brewery. The brewery was leased to the Mount Gambier Brewery Company in 1902, though this arrangement fell through. Walter Anderson went voluntary liquidation in 1911 and the brewery was put up for sale.

John Molony from the West End Brewery in Broken Hill, purchased the brewery in 1911. John died in 1916 leaving his son Edward to continue the business. The brewing side of the business was sold to the South Australian Brewing Company in 1923 and the site was used as a distribution point for the south east. The company continued to make aerated waters and cordials. The Standard Brewery site was sold in 1954 and the company moved to new premises. Edward died in 1959, the company is now owned by the Mathews Service Hotels Group and is still making aerated waters today.
