| Edward James Frederick Crawford was born in 1809 and immigrated to South Australia aboard the Dorset in 1839. Soon after his arrival, he found employment with the Southern Australian newspaper. When the paper ceased operation, Crawford turned his attention to brewing, a trade that would define his career for the next four decades. In 1844, Crawford and his business partner George Tinline leased the Hindmarsh Brewery from Daniel Cudmore. When Tinline left the partnership the following year, Crawford purchased the brewery outright. His brothers later joined him in the business, operating together until 1852, when two of them left to establish their own breweries. By 1859, Crawford’s fortunes had declined, and he was declared insolvent, losing control of the Hindmarsh Brewery. He soon recovered enough to lease the Pirie Street Brewery, expanding his operations shortly after to include the Halifax Street Brewery. These ventures, however, were short-lived, lasting only a year or two, before Crawford relocated his brewing business once again. In 1861, he acquired a new site at Richard Street, Hindmarsh, where he re-established the Hindmarsh Brewery under the name Crawford & Co. This enterprise proved far more successful, with Crawford’s beers gaining wide popularity across the colony. In 1868, Crawford sold the thriving brewery to his brother-in-law George Catchlove and his partner Herman Haussen, who continued to operate it under the Haussen & Catchlove name, one of South Australia’s most enduring brewing firms. Following the sale, Crawford moved interstate to Ararat, Victoria, where he founded another brewery. This venture operated until 1875, after which he took up a position as brewer at the Victoria Brewery in Sale, Victoria. Edward James Frederick Crawford passed away in Sale in 1880, remembered as one of South Australia’s early pioneering brewers whose ventures helped shape the colony’s brewing industry. ![]() State Library South Australia - B 22103/25 |
