Charles “Boxer” Ware, the youngest son of Mrs F. Ware, was born on 26 December 1870, Boxing Day, at the Exchange Hotel in Adelaide, from which his distinctive name was derived. He was educated at the Commercial College, Norwood, and later at Stanley Grammar School, Watervale. Although he initially intended to pursue a medical career, declining health forced him to abandon those plans and instead enter the brewing industry, a profession better suited to his circumstances. Leaving school early, Ware trained as a brewer under the guidance of his brother, Thomas L. Ware, and became a partner in the well-known firm of A. W. & T. L. Ware, proprietors of the Torrensside Brewery. In 1894 he accompanied his brother to Western Australia to assist in establishing a brewery at Coolgardie, and he was also among the promoters of the Norseman Brewery. Ware entered local government in 1898, being elected Mayor of Thebarton, a position he held until 1901 and again in 1904. Following the amalgamation of the Torrensside Brewery with the Walkerville Brewing Co-operative, he served on the board of directors. Beyond brewing and public life, Ware was involved in numerous business and community enterprises. He sat on the boards of several mining companies and was a director of Greater Wondergraph Picture Theatres Ltd and the Adelaide Bottle Co-operative Company Ltd. He also served as a committeeman of the Adelaide Racing Club and maintained a strong interest in sport, being associated with many metropolitan sporting and athletic organisations. In addition, he was engaged in agricultural pursuits and remained closely connected to Thebarton for many years, where he served as president of the Thebarton Institute and took an active role in local affairs.
