| Thomas L. Ware was born at Burra in 1864. In 1883 he began his brewing career with Fotheringham & Co. at Kapunda, where he spent twelve months training under the guidance of George Teagle. He then continued his experience at Fitzgerald’s Brewery in Castlemaine, remaining there until 1886, when he returned to South Australia to join his brother, Alexander W. Ware, at the Torrensside Brewery. As head brewer, Thomas Ware was widely regarded as a man of exceptional foresight and ambition. He travelled extensively overseas to broaden his technical knowledge and gather new ideas, experiences that greatly enhanced the quality and reputation of the brewery’s products. His efforts were rewarded with significant recognition, including medals at the Adelaide Jubilee Exhibition in 1887, the Melbourne Exhibition in 1888, and the Paris Exhibition in 1889, as well as a diploma at the London Brewers’ Exhibition in 1891. Thomas L. Ware died tragically on 22 December 1896 after drowning while swimming at Grange. His funeral, held two days later, was one of the largest seen at the time, with contemporary reports noting that more than one hundred vehicles followed the hearse. ![]() Thomas L Ware |
