Charles Ware began his Australian working life as the owner of World’s End Station near Burra and later operated a brewing business at Kooringa. The severe drought between 1865 and 1868 forced him to sell the station, marking the end of his pastoral pursuits and the beginning of his hotel career. In 1868 he became publican of the Exchange Hotel, which quickly gained a reputation as a gathering place for businesspeople. The hotel’s success owed much to the warm personality and natural managerial ability of Mrs. Ware, combined with Charles Ware’s integrity and genial manner. Together they established a clientele drawn from the city’s leading figures, a connection that endured over time. Charles Ware died in 1871.
