Before entering the brewing industry, George Henry Catchlove had already built up a substantial fortune. He was the licensed victualler at Echunga, where his hotel was widely regarded as one of the best establishments outside Adelaide. Known as an excellent host, he became particularly popular with commercial travellers. Catchlove later turned to brewing and for many years was associated with the late Henry H. Haussen as junior partner in Haussen & Co., brewers at Hindmarsh, a business the firm had purchased from the late Mr. Crawford. After retiring from the Hindmarsh Brewery, he remained out of business for several years. In 1879 he returned to brewing, joining E. C. Lockyer, Vinrace Lawrance, and the late W. H. Rosman to purchase the Kooringa brewery formerly operated by William Banks. The new enterprise traded as Catchlove & Co. The partnership continued for eight years, until Lawrence and Rosman withdrew from the firm.
